Listen to our 2023Q3 Ministry Update: Called to Lead Mentor
(Author: Anna & Lucia Kim) (Read by: Anna & Lucia Kim)
Called to Lead Mentor
Sometime in 2022, there was discussion about me (Anna) taking the leadership of our local church’s worship team. I’ll be honest—this is exactly the type of ministry that feels like it fits both my strengths and preferences. How exciting! And yet…I did not feel permission from the Lord to really step into the role. In our previous newsletter, I mentioned I’d been able to attend a weeklong leadership development training in May. In July, the Lord brought several details into place, and there was suddenly a clear path to follow. I have accepted temporary leadership of the worship team, with the express intention and plan to mentor a younger believer into the role over the course of the next year. I began praying and thinking, then finally held a meeting for our worship team last month. What an absolute joy! We read several passages about worship from both the Old and New Testaments, then meditated on how we can apply those passages as a team. We set up some clear guidelines for how we will function, and then had a blast during our first ever “jam session”—just playing and singing together for fun and to worship. I will soon begin to meet with the leader-in-training, Rubiel, to mentor him in leadership principles and skills. I am excited about the potential to work myself “out of a job,” and see members in our local church being built up in ministry capacity.

One of the key takeaways from our time together is the following thought:
Leading worship on Sunday must not be a performance. Rather, our worship on Sunday morning should simply be a public extension of our personal, private practice of worshipping the Lord.
Healthy families – Healthy churches – Missional churches (all parts of Great Commission work)
As part of the Deep Roots (Raíces Profundas) ministry, we had the opportunity to hold a workshop for encouraging and equipping Christian families in the area of education. God led us to educate our girls at home since the pandemic, and with both practical experience and Anna’s background in education, we were able to share some basics about educating our children from a Biblical worldview.

We’ve mentioned previously the need for resources to help parents develop healthy family discipleship practices. Kyu has been researching, learning, and synthesizing information that will form part of the Deep Roots ministry toolkit. As we equip parents with knowledge and resources for discipling their families, we pray God will use Deep Roots to grow many Christian families into holistically healthy, Christ-centered people who serve in their local churches, and that those churches will be healthy and missional.
Visa News
Kyu submitted the first round of visa applications 2 weeks ago, and it is still “under review.” Please pray with us, as the visa renewal process has been lengthy and full of hurdles for several missionaries we know. We are praying for God’s favor, but also pray that we would trust in His providence and sovereignty while we wait for a response.
The Talents
One of the applications of from Jesus’ parable of the talents is that the good and faithful servants are the ones who diligent in their work, regardless of their capacity. The servant with five talents is congratulated when he earns five more. The servant with two talents is praised for earning two more! In this season, there is also plenty of mundane ministry opportunities. We are opening our home for small group, have counseled couples and individuals, coached ministry teams, and have spent time praying. These ministries are some of the very same things many of you are doing in other parts of the world, acting as parts of local church congregations. We are thankful to hear of God’s work happening in your lives, and feel so very privileged to share some of what God is doing in Medellín/Envigado, Colombia.
