Listen to our 2024Q1 Ministry Update: Deep Roots Ministry Debut
(Author: Kyu & Anna Kim) (Read by: Anna Kim)
At our first coffee break, I caught up with a young couple and asked how they were feeling about the Deep Roots (Raíces Profundas) seminar. The man answered with one word, “convicted.”

We began at 8 a.m. that Saturday, February 24. Throughout the day, our speakers and panelists shared about the Biblical perspective of family identity. The message that we must have our identity as families centered on the truths of the gospel encouraged and challenged many! As we have shared previously, many Christian parents during and after the pandemic began to realize their need to anchor their parenting in Biblical truth. Since a large portion of those parents are first-generation followers of Christ, they often have seen few to no examples of godly parenting. The Deep Roots family discipleship ministry seeks to equip families to grow in their identity as Christ-followers, with a desire to see healthy generations of Christian families raised up.

The six members of the Deep Roots ministry team spent literal weeks of preparation to coordinate this event that served 80 participants, ranging from couples to single moms, to pastoral students at a local seminary. Don and Diedre Galardi donated their time to speak while in Medellín for other ministry work.

We had excellent interpreters who served alongside Don and Diedre. A local church allowed us to use their space and staffed support teams for the event. The Deep Roots kids (ages 9-15) served in photography, childcare, set up and logistics. What a delight to see collaborative work that builds the kingdom!

We asked participants to complete an exit survey, and the feedback we received was overwhelmingly positive. A couple of highlights:
“It was beyond what I expected. It was edifying for the process I am going through at this moment or rather what the Lord is doing in my life.”
“I think one of the questions every Christian asks is, what is my purpose in life? Now, I have clarity about our purpose as a family. It is contributing to the Kingdom!””
Praise the Lord for the successful event, and the launch of the Deep Roots ministry that we pray will help families grow in faith…in the Medellín area and beyond! Thank you for your prayers for this specific event, and for those who gave special financial gifts to offset some of the start-up costs of this ministry.
After the Deep Roots conference, our family took a break to get away from the city and visit a new-to-us area of Colombia: Salento! We saw the tallest palm trees in the world, and enjoyed a downhill mountain biking excursion from 10,000 ft back to down to the town at 6,200 ft. The biodiversity in Colombia is amazing, and we marvel at God’s creativity we’ve seen in the natural world!

One of the key elements for any ministry work is prayer, so we launched a Praying Parents weekly meeting the first week of March through Deep Roots. We meet on Zoom and have had groups ranging from 7-18 parents each Tuesday. Using Stormie Omartian’s The Power of the Praying Parent as a guide, we focus specifically on praying for our children and our role as parents. It has been encouraging, and we look forward to hearing how God answers prayers through this group!
We had the privilege of hosting a vision trip from Bethel Church several weeks ago. A notable eye-opening moment for the team was learning that although cities like Medellín are traditionally considered “reached” with the gospel, very few people can articulate the gospel message and how it relates to them personally. During their visit, they learned more about Medellín’s history, culture, and geography. Most importantly, they connected and built relationships with fellow brothers and sisters from the Colombian Church.

Thank you for your prayers, encouragement, and gifts that support us to live and work in Colombia. God is using you to further His kingdom!
