Life Ministry or Ministry Life?

Listen to our 2021Q4 Ministry Update: Life Ministry or Ministry Life?

(Author: Anna Kim) (Read by: Kyu Kim)

Both! “I’ve heard stories about Christian families sharing their lives together in community, and oh, how much I’d love that!” Our friend and sister in Christ went on to describe the practice of Christian hospitality that Anna and I had the privilege to experience as we grew up. Like many Christians we have met in Colombia, Serina* is a first-generation Christ follower, and has a deep desire to live out the gospel in community, focusing especially on family discipleship.

In response to this observable and expressed need among many Colombian believers, God has led us to begin laying groundwork for a new ministry we hope to further develop in 2022. Raíces profundas (“Deep Roots”) aims to disciple families so they are deeply rooted in their identity in Christ as Kingdom citizens. Our hope is to see parents and children behave as a healthy holistic family unit, reflecting Christ in all aspects of their individual and family life. We are starting with a small ministry team of 4 couples/families and with a targeted focus of supporting homeschooling families in generational discipleship.

Other ministry updates

Comunidades Caminando con Cristo (Communities Walking with Christ) is a small group ministry being launched through our local church. Together with the pastoral family, we identified 2 couples and invited them to discover how small groups can help us grow intentionally in practicing Christian community. We have hosted the couples twice and have now transitioned to the role of encouragement and accountability as they plan their own monthly or bi-monthly meetings. Each couple is showing genuine excitement and motivation to grow their intentional friendship.

The couple on the left are the first Community Walking with Christ group.

All the filming for the YouTube ministry Descubriendo la Biblia Kids (Discovering the Bible Kids) has been completed. Kyu filmed, edited, and uploaded over 145 episodes of Bible stories with interactive reflection questions. These episodes will continue to premiere weekly through January 2023. While Colombian churches are open for in-person meetings, we know from YouTube statistics that there are people throughout Latin America who continue to view content weekly.

The annual Mujeres a sus pies (Women at His Feet) conference took place in early October, and Anna was able to participate as a discussion panelist on dealing with brokenness in our lives. The conference Rupturas, experimenta la gracia de la restauración (Brokenness: Experience the Grace of Restoration) included testimonies, worship, and Biblical teaching on the theme. It was attended by women in person, as well as online throughout Colombia and abroad. See Anna’s participation in the link below.

Family Life

We enjoyed a few days’ break from homeschool and most ministry activities the week of Thanksgiving. We hosted our coworkers and some friends for a traditional meal (only missed the green bean casserole this year!) and spent Friday as “tourists” in Medellín at a replica village featuring traditional regional architecture.

Home Ministry Assignment (HMA)

We will be in the United States from the end of December through April for our first HMA. It has been nearly three years (Jan. 2019) since we moved to Colombia, and we look forward to reconnecting with family, friends, and ministry partners stateside. We will communicate more of our US travel itinerary in our private Facebook group as we have details available. Hopefully we will get to see many of you in person!

Prayer Requests

  • For health leading up to our travel – It is rainy season, which increases smog in the valley. This often leads to headaches and respiratory problems.
  • For our HMA preparation – We are tying up loose ends in Colombia and making plans for our time in the US.
  • For experiencing transitions – We will be experiencing additional stress with travel and switching cultures, which can be particularly difficult for kids.
  • For various ministries – Raíces profundas, Caminando con Cristo, Descubriendo la Biblia Kids, mentoring and discipling relationships, women’s ministry
  • For salvation: Ana, Brady*

Thank You

We praise God for our financial partners, prayers partners, and loved ones! God has richly blessed us through your consistent giving and prayers.
